SemTech 2008
The fourth annual Semantic Technology Conference (SemTech) took place at the San Jose Fairmont Hotel. There were more than more than 1,000 attendees covering a wide range of profiles: publishers, users, developers, entrepreneurs, businessmen… They were privileged witnesses of the last advances in this area.

Some trends spotted in San Jose:
• A killer application has not been found yet, and it is not expected to be found. For this reason it is supposed a smooth introduction of these technologies with his progressive inclusion in solutions.
• At present, it has been reached a maturity level enough to include these technologies in products.
• A global semantic solution for all the areas is not feasible. Nevertheless vertical solutions are running for both B2B and Web 2.0
• Venture Capital companies are betting on applications that use these technologies in the Web 2.0 (for instance, Twine). A 50 bn $ market is expected in 2010, but only if Web 2.0 companies find sustainable business models.
• There is an exploratory activity by Administration to find concrete uses of solutions with semantic components. Mainly in relation to security (terrorism) and defence (USA)
• Social applications will have a paramount importance in the development of semantic technologies
• Efforts to reuse existing data must be done. “Bridges” between relational database and RDF are being defined
